The Hub City Junior Golf Association received a $2,500 grant for their efforts to encourage young people to play. The grant came from the Tennessee Golf Foundation’s Bruce Edenton, Jr. Jackson Golf Fund.
The Bruce Edenton, Jr. Jackson Golf Fund was established in 2009 by his son, Bruce Edenton, III to honor his father and his significant impact on the game through his terms on the boards of the Tennessee Golf Association, Southern Golf Association and Jackson Country Club. Both successful hoteliers, father and son are passionate about the game and Bruce, III was looking for a way to give back to the game through a named fund held through the Tennessee Golf Foundation.
The family’s first grant through the fund was awarded on June 22 at Highland Green Golf Center to the Hub City Junior Golf Association (HCJGA), a Jackson-based youth development organization founded in 2002 for the purpose of introducing and promoting the sport of golf to youth in Jackson and its surrounding areas.
HCJGA’s efforts are about more than just teaching youth how to play golf. "It teaches kids self-discipline for one thing," said Hewitt Chatman, President of Hub City Golf Association. "You have to police yourselves when you're playing golf. It's the only sport that really does that entirely and I think it has a lot to offer about character and so forth."
Bruce Edenton, III commented, “We are looking to help the game and young people in Jackson, and the HCJGA is doing good things, introducing these youngsters to the game.”
