(FRANKLIN) It was a day for comebacks at the 40th Annual Tennessee
Senior Amateur Championship, held at Vanderbilt Legends Club (South).
Fourty-six golfers began the day in two divisions, looking for a chance
to claim the title of best senior golfer. Both the Championship and the
Super Senior Division titles had to be decided in extra holes.
Jess Voorhies (Winchester) began the day with a two shot lead in the
Super Senior Division (65+). When the day was over, Ron Bargatze (White
House) had tied Voorhies, both finishing with a three day total of 6
over 219. After paring the first two playoff holes, Voorhies found
trouble, hitting his tee shot on the par 4 twelth into the hazard. He
was then able to hit a miraculous recovery shot, ending up short of the
green. Bargatze hit over the green and failed to get up and down for par
leaving the door open for Voorhies. Voorhies chipped to a foot and
drained the par putt to claim the Super Senior Division title.
In the Championship Division, Jerry Ishee II (Nashville) completed
his two day comeback, after an opening round 75, as he shot a 4 under
par 67 to finish at 2 under par 211. Tieing him for the lead in the
clubhouse was Mike Nixon (Nashville), who also finished at 211 after a 3
under par 68. Both Nixon and Ishee II reached the par 4 tenth in two,
and Ishee II was able to get in with a two putt par to claim the
championship.
