Finding the Right Clubs posted 4/11/08 The important part of getting kids to enjoy the game is having the proper equipment. Things have changed from having adult cut off clubs that were too heavy and too stiff to affordable, effective and with many options of junior clubs. Even in the last five years companies are paying attention to our future of golf, juniors. When deciding on clubs keep in mind three things; 1. Price, 2. Length , 3. Options.
Price is usually an important consideration when buying junior clubs. Especially if the juniors are just taking up the game and not sure how much they are interested. Due to the competitive market and now many manufacturers offering junior clubs, you should be able to find something affordable.
The first, and most important part of club fitting is finding the appropriate length of clubs. Kids grow an average of 2-3 inches a year. Keep this in mind while determining the right club. We reccommend an inch longer so they can use them for two seasons. It's ok for them to choke down on the grip at the beggining. Each company offers their own sizing of junior clubs. Therefore you must check the right length with each companies offerings.
The last thing to consider is what options are available once you have determined the right length. Most companies offer two sizes of clubs, and most are in left handed as well as right handed. Options may include the following: 1. A starter set-a little of everything, 2. Different colors for boys and girls, 3. Full sets, 4. Begining to Advanced models and shafts, 5. With or Without a Stand Bag, 6. Hybrid woods, 7. Drivers-Some sets include Drivers or just fairway wood, 8. Putters, 9. Additional Irons to add to Set.
We use the following companies: US Kids Golf- website: uskidsgolf.com Many Options Nike Golf- website: nikegolf.com 3 Different Sizes Callaway/Topflite- website: callawaygolf.com 2 Different Sizes Cobra- website: cobragolf.com 2 Different Sizes
Once your junior reaches 5'1" they will be in a ladies length. Once they reach 5'6" they will be in an adult men's length. As you will discover their are more options, more confusion, will looking at adult sets. However, you can still find good sets at good prices. Contact your local PGA professional or give our office a call for advise.

| Being Mentally Strong: It's amazing how being mentally confident can make a difference in sports, self confidence, and the journey through life. If you are an avid golfer take this Mental Golf Profile. The test is given in about 10 minutes online with instant results. Annika Sorentstam and many other LPGA players work with Bobby Foster, the administrator of the test. There are about 20-25 questions and it's amazing what you find out about yourself. This is perfect for your child to take. You will know how they learn, what they are thinking and how to help them. The cost is only $40.00. I took it a couple of months ago and was shocked by the results. I always knew I was strong mentally, having worked with several sports phsychologists myself. However, I learned what makes me nervous, what my husband tries to contribute to my game but how it doesn't help me, and how my daily routine works. Click here to take the test. |
Book of The Week: This week's book is called Games Girls Play : Understanding and Guiding Young Female Athletes by Caroline Silby PHD. This book offers both parents and coaches a fresh, smart guide for responding to the needs of the young female athlete. Whether they are writing about choosing a sport, building confidence, staying calm during a competition, or debriefing after the game, the authors have created a powerful primer on the inner work of sports psychology. As they explain, "teaching athletes to use their thoughts, perceptions, images and body language, focus and effort to move ahead are the life lessons of sports."
