Ted Rhodes (1916-1969)
% Ted Rhodes was the premier black player on the UGA Tour in the 1940’s and 50’s % Rhodes played in the 1949 US Open in Los Angeles at Riveria % He won the Negro National Open in 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1957 % After his death in 1969 Cumberland Golf Course in Nashville was re-named in his honor % Ted Rhodes was posthumously inducted into the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame in 1997, where his daughters Peggy White and Deborah Rhodes accepted his honor
With the backing of friend and heavyweight boxing champion, Joe Louis, Ted Rhodes was able to begin playing on the United Golf Association Tour. The mostly black tour was played on primarily second-rate municipal courses. For a decade, Rhodes dominated this tour. Some estimate he won over 150 tournaments. | |||||
