NEWBECK CAPTURES 19^th EDITION OF THE  DON MALARKEY SENIOR OPEN

 (Signal Mountain, TN) 

George Newbeck , Tennessee Section PGA professional from Maryville, fired a final round 72 to capture the 2002 Don Malarkey Senior Open at the Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club today.  Newbeck finished one stroke ahead of TPGA professionals Bill Franklin from Sparta and Sam Adams from Mountain City.  Newbeck’s two day total of 140 was two under par for the two-day event.  Adams and Franklin finished at 141.

Amateur and Signal Mountain G & CC member Ron Johnson, who had the tournament lead following Monday’s first round with a 6 under par 65, finished with a 77 for a total of 142 to finish in a tie for Fourth Place in the Championship with professional Gary Head from Hendersonville.  Johnson’s effort captured Low Amateur honors.  Nashville’s Lew Conner finished is Second Place in the amateur division with a 69-74= 143. 

This year’s event is being played at the 6,100-yard par 71 Signal Mountain Golf & Country Club.  Amateurs and professionals over the age of 50 have come from across the state to compete in a great event which honors Mr. Don Malarkey “Old Pro”, member of the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame and Pro Emeritus at Signal Mountain G&CC.

Alexian Villages of Tennessee (Signal Mountain) is the new title sponsor of the event, which is in its 19^th year.
