Thursday August 28, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: LOREN PERSONETT STORMS FROM 10 BACK TO WIN THE 2003 TENNESSEE PGA SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP (Chattanooga, TN) On a day when scores were higher, Loren Personett blisters the field with a –7 under par 65 for the final round. His 65 was the best of the day by 6 strokes. He was tied for 15th place coming into the final round and was 10 shots back of leader Mike Bennett. The hardest hole of the tournament, #7 162 yard Par 3 showed its toughness again today costing a few of the front runners a chance at the championship. Loren Personett, PGA Assistant Professional at Two Rivers GC in Nashville, posted a three day total of –4 under par. Greg Wyatt, PGA Assistant Professional at Heatherhurst GC in Crossville, played bad on the front nine but resurrected his day by birdying 5 of the first 7 holes on the back nine to pull even with Personett. He had a double bogey on Hole #17 to end up in second place with a three round total of –2 under par. Tied for third place were our second round leader Mike Bennett, PGA Assistant Professional at Chattanooga Golf Center, Bruce Etter, PGA Professional at Chattanooga Golf & CC, and Shane Meredith, PGA Assistant Professional from Richland CC in Nashville. Hank Patton, PGA Professional at McMinnville CC, finished in sixth place at even par for the tournament. Tied for seventh place were, Richard Rebne-Council Fire, Scott Masters-Holston Hills CC, Rob Riddle-Black Creek, & Kip Henley-River Run.
This was the third and final round at the 6,999-yard par 72 Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga. In all 62 of Tennessee’s finest golf professionals competed in this year’s Championship.
The TPGA Section Championship is one of the premier events of the year for TPGA Professionals, alongside the TGA’s Tennessee State Open Championship and the TPGA Club Professional Championship. The 2003 TPGA Section Champion earned a berth into the PGA Northern Regional Championship, which will be contested September 25-28 in Nebraska and an exemption into the 2004 FedEx St. Jude Classic conducted at the TPC at Southwind in Memphis on the PGA Tour.
