KELVIN BURGIN HAS WIRE TO WIRE VICTORY
AT THE TENNESSEE PGA SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP
(Crossville, TN) Course conditions at the 38th Annual Regions Bank Tennessee PGA Section Championship were extremely difficult. The wind was blowing the entire time, the greens were stimping close to twelve, the rough was three inches thick and the hole locations were challenging, but host PGA Professional Kelvin Burgin conquered the conditions to win the championship at –1 under par. Kelvin is the professional at The State of Tennessee’s Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain, where the 54 hole tournament was played. He did not run away with the tournament as Mickey Barker, the pro at Galloway Golf Course in Memphis, nearly chipped in from the fringe on hole 18. Kelvin followed that great shot by scoring the only birdie that hole 18 yielded during the final round. Kelvin earned $7,000 for winning the championship and a spot into the 2007 Stanford St. Jude Classic to be held in Memphis, TN next June.
Kip Henley (Crossville) made a run on the front nine holes as he made the turn –4 under par and +1 over for the tournament and only a couple of shots behind the leaders. Chris Stacy (Pennington Gap, VA) from Lonesome Pine Country Club caught fire on the back nine as he birdied holes 10, 11, 12, and 16. Those two finished tied for third place. In a tie for fifth place, Mark Houser (Kingsport) from Warriors Path Golf Course and Matt Swarts (Franklin) from Belle Meade Country Club each finished the tournament at +5 over par after shooting –1 under par in the final round.
In a five-way tie for seventh place were professionals, Rob Nelson (Bristol) from Bristol Country Club, Bruce Etter (Chattanooga) from Chattanooga Golf & Country Club, Eric Rebmann (Knoxville) from Egwani Farms Golf Club, Loren Personett (Antioch) from McCabe Golf Course and Audie Johnson (Lebanon) from Lebanon Country Club. Loren’s tie with Audie wrapped up the 2006 Regions Bank Tennessee PGA Professional Player of the Year Award. Loren has won that award numerous times.
The TPGA Section Championship is one of the premier events of the year for TPGA Professionals, alongside the TGA’s Tennessee State Open Championship and the TPGA Professional Championship. The 2007 Regions Bank Tennessee PGA Section Championship is scheduled to be played at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, TN.
